Battling Cattle Barons

Johnson County War

The Johnson County War is both fact and legend, and as such you will find discrepancies of the facts.  The following are truths:

·  The rich cattle barons (regulators) from Cheyenne and their hired gunmen from Texas did take a train to what was one of the last range wars in Wyoming.  The train had special luxury cars, their personal chefs, and all of the comforts of that era.

·  They took two newspapermen with them to report this historic event.

·  They had a list of 70 men that they intended to kill.

·  There was a fight at the KC Ranch and Nate Champion and Nick Ray were killed.

·  The town of Buffalo, Wyoming was to be seized, the militia arms confiscated, and anyone on the list of 70 killed.

·  The regulators were trapped at the TA Ranch.  The Army Cavalry at Fort McKinney was ordered by President Harrison to put down the insurrection.  Had the Army not shown up, the regulators may have been killed.

·  No one was ever charged for the deaths of Nate Champion and Nick Ray.
