JOHN S. NORDIN P. E.Senior Research
Engineer
John was born and raised in
Minnesota. He received his B.S. in Chemical
Engineering from the University of Minnesota in
1961. In 1965 he received his Ph.D. from the
University of Minnesota in Biochemical Engineering.

He has over 30 years of engineering
experience, including 21 years with two environmental
engineering firms and 14 years with Western Research
Institute. He has provided training for handling
of hazardous chemicals and hazardous site investigations
under OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910.120. He is published
in vapor cloud modeling for toxic gas spill accidents
and volatilization of PCBs from contaminated
soils. He provided technical consulting for
handling of chemicals at the DOE Nevada HAZMAT Spill
Center for vapor cloud modeling release experiments in
1993-1995. He has written over 130 reports to
clients and technical publications.
Dr.
Nordin was a staff engineer at Mason and Hanger
Engineers, 1979-1986, and developed methodology for
feedstock preparation for a U.S. EPA mobile incinerator.
He developed environmental monitoring of nerve gas
releases, plume modeling of gaseous atmospheric releases
and plans and specifications for incineration of
explosive-contaminated soils. He developed
hazardous material regulations for the city of
Lexington, KY, and conducted oil spill release studies
at the EPA test facility, Leonardo, NJ. He
developed chemical processing and environmental
engineering design and development for Mason and Hanger
with clients like the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S.
Navy, Department of Defense, U.S. EPA and private
industry. He performed on-site assessments of
hazardous chemical contamination at seven army depots
and weapons manufacturing facilities and an expansion of
nitric acid production facilities at Radford Army
Ammunition Plant (technical and economic
considerations). He has sampled PCB-contaminated soils
and sediments in Waukegan Harbor superfund site under
contract for the EPA. He has written computer
software for mass/energy balances for TNT thick liquor
recovery plant and for incineration processes. He
has consulted on red water and chemical weapons
disposal.
Dr. Nordin, a Licensed
Chemical Engineer in Wyoming, has been the professional
engineering expert for the chemical dispersion projects
in the Emergency Response Technology program at
University of Wyoming Research Institute under contracts
to the DOE. Dr. Nordin conducted chemical spill release
studies, emissions monitoring, and air permitting for
incineration systems, wet air oxidation and hot-gas
stripping of energy process wastewaters. Dr.
Nordin was consulting engineer for U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers projects on incineration of
explosive-contaminated soils and arsenic- and
pesticide-contaminated soils.
He and his
wife, Marlene have been married for 33 years. They
enjoy hiking and photography.
